Outline of Shiga University

Shiga University was established as a national university in 1949, through the consolidation of Hikone Commercial College and Shiga Teachers Training College. The university headquarters, the Faculty of Economics, and the Graduate School of Economics are all located in Hikone City, while the Faculty of Education and the Graduate School of Education are located in Otsu City. Both Hikone and Otsu are historical cities within Shiga Prefecture, with the prefecture also being the home of Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest freshwater lake. The Hikone Campus is actually located close by the shores of Lake Biwa, near Hikone Castle. Meanwhile, the Otsu Campus is situated near the Seta River, close by Ishiyamadera Temple. Both campuses abound with natural greenery, their settings offering quiet, calm and composed study environments.

With a student body of approximately 4,000 students, Shiga University is a relatively small academic institution. However, this small stature means that strong bonds are fostered both among students, and between the student body and university staff. Furthermore, with enhanced library, IT, and sporting facilities, it is possible for students to study by themselves, with friends, and with faculty members. At Shiga University, both students and university staff strive to form a single community through which campus life can be enjoyed to the utmost.

The goal of Shiga University is to “nurture the development of highly-specialized, sophisticated professionals, who, while possessing a global perspective, also possess a sense of humanity.” At the university, we have traditionally placed emphasis on practical education; resulting in many of our alumni holding leading positions in both the business and education fields. As we enter the 21st Century, an era of heightened trans-border human exchange, to contribute to human development on a global scale, Shiga University is dedicated more than ever to providing international students with study opportunities, thus contributing to global peace and human prosperity.
