Applying for Activities Other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence Previously Granted

International Students having the status of residence of “College Student” can take on “activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” if the student is given a “comprehensive permission to engage in unauthorized activities without restrictions on activities or locations”. Working hours should be twenty-eight hours or less per week; if the student is a research student / non-degree student, the working hours should be fourteen hours or less per week. During summer / winter / spring vacation, maximum working hours should be eight hours or less per day.

Application forms for the “activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” are available at related offices at the university or can be downloaded on the website of Immigration Bureau of Japan, Ministry of Justice. Please fill out the application form and submit the form along with your passport and your alien registration card to the International Exchange Section, Department of Academic and International Affairs Department (Hikone Campus) or Section in charge of International Students (Otsu Campus).

Documents Required

  1. Application for permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted (designated by the Ministry of Justice)

  2. Passport (for confirmation of passport number, date of issue, expiration date as well as other descriptions on the application form)
  3. Alien Registration Card (to be returned after making a copy)

After inspection, the application form as well as a rider and another form will be provided. Please submit the above three types of documents along with your passport and alien registration card to the immigration bureau in your jurisdiction.


Information on a permit to take on “activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted”

The permit to take on “activities other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” expires with the expiration of the period of stay that had been granted when permit was given. Students planning to remain enrolled at the university and work part-time should apply for a permit to extend the period of stay at the Immigration Bureau.
Please submit the completed application form for “permission to engage in activity other than that permitted under the status of residence previously granted” to the related office at the university about one week prior to the date of your visit to the Immigration Bureau.
The application form as well as a rider and another form will be provided. Please submit the above three types of documents along with registration certificate and other required documents to the immigration bureau in your jurisdiction.

Note : Students are not permitted to work in industries that are offensive to public order and morals, such as sex-related industries.
